This lecture is a series of three units that introduce first year EFL Bachelor’s students to the history of the United Kingdom. Through the first unit, students will study prehistoric Britain; the different groups of people that settled the island during prehistory along with their lifestyles. By so doing, they will discover the first settlers of Britain and thus the origin of the British culture.
Unit 2 shifts the focus to Britain recorded history. The main aim is to help students discover the different groups of people that contributed to the shaping of the British genetic and cultural identity. So, after studying the first settlers of Britain, Students will learn about its invaders (Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings), their origin, the reasons and circumstances behind their invasions and their impact on the British Isles.
The third unit traces the different royal houses that succeeded to the English/British thrown starting with the House of Normandy and ending with the current house; the House of Windsor. At the end of this unit and with the help of unit 1 and 2, students are expected to gain a holistic view about the British history with a clear understanding of the chronology of the main eras and events.
