The course entitled "Linguistics Theories and Core Areas" is designed for MA1 students specialized in linguistics. Its objectives are to reintroduce students to the fundamental terms and concepts of linguistics through an exploration of its various branches, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax, which are collectively referred to as the micro-scope of linguistics. The course aims to enhance students' understanding of linguistic analysis methods, familiarize them with key ideas and issues in contemporary linguistics, and highlight the principal theoretical frameworks from major schools of thought, including Traditional Grammar, Comparative Philology, and Structuralism.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify and explain the key terms and concepts in linguistics across its core areas.
2. Apply various methods of linguistic analysis to different linguistic phenomena.
3. Critically engage with the fundamental ideas and challenges within contemporary linguistics.
4. Differentiate among the major theoretical frameworks and schools of thought in linguistics.
Upon completing the course, students will have a deeper understanding of language and the analytical tools needed for more advanced studies in linguistics.
