Course Overview – Computer-Aided Structural Analysis (SAP2000)
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of computer-aided structural analysis using the SAP2000 software, with a strong focus on the Finite Element Method (FEM).
Modern engineering relies heavily on advanced analysis software capable of automatically solving complex structural problems. However, it is essential for engineers to understand the underlying principles of FEM in order to interpret, verify, and critically evaluate the results produced by such tools.
Throughout this course, students will learn how to:
Understand the basic principles of the Finite Element Method (FEM)
Develop accurate structural models using SAP2000
Define materials, sections, boundary conditions, and loads
Perform different types of analyses, including:
Linear static analysis
P-Delta (second-order) analysis
Nonlinear analysis
Dynamic analysis (modal and response spectrum)
Interpret results such as displacements, internal forces, stresses, and vibration modes
The course combines theoretical understanding with practical modeling skills, enabling students to use SAP2000 not only as a computational tool, but as a reliable engineering decision-making instrument.
By the end of the course, students will be able to formulate structural problems, run analyses, and confidently assess the accuracy and relevance of the results in accordance with engineering standards and codes.
