This course handout is primarily intended for both lecturers and students in agronomic sciences. It has been designed as a teaching support material to accompany the delivery and learning of the Field Crops module, providing a structured synthesis of fundamental and applied knowledge in this field.
This work is the outcome of more than three years of teaching experience in this module. It reflects a progressive process of enrichment and refinement of the content, taking into account both students’ learning needs and the evolution of scientific and technical knowledge in agronomy. The main objective is to provide a clear, coherent, and accessible document that facilitates the understanding of major crop species and their agronomic characteristics.
The handout is organized into several chapters covering the main crops and crop groups of agronomic importance: Introduction to Field Crops, General Characteristics of Cereal Crops (Wheat, Barley Maize, Oats), The Potato, Grain Legumes, Industrial Crops, Forage Crops.
