B/ Course Description

            The shortest way of describing the contents of this course is to say that it provides a starting point for Master students’ research efforts. It is primarily intended to serve as a textbook to students who wish to learn how to design ESP courses and programs in areas of specialization. Included in the course are guidelines for developing specific purposes curricula and assessing learners enrolled in ESP courses.

By the end of this course students should have a clear understanding of:

1. The distinction between syllabus, course and curriculum;

2. The purposes and characteristics of ESP course;

3. The difference between the different types of syllabus;

4. Factors affecting ESP Course Design;

5. The purposes and types of needs analysis

6. Methodology and approaches of needs analysis; and

7. What do ESP practitioners do with Needs Analysis results?
